Lennox Head Heritage Trail

An Ongoing Project

Whilst I am submitting my latest draft of the brochure, this is hardly the final copy. The attempt to write Aboriginal history into the heritage story of the town has been an upward struggle...so much local Aboriginal history has already

been lost. I have organised a meeting with the Aboriginal Land Council in order to discuss possible entries. As they are incredibly busy and terrifically underfunded, this meeting could not be scheduled until weeks after the submission date of the assignment. I would think it incredibly inappropriate to publish the brochure without the approval of the local Land Council. Although the information in the brochure was amassed from different public resources, I do not feel qualified to write their history, especially without their knowledge or consent.

I plan to discuss with the Land Council the absence of the massacre in mainstream local history. I am aware of the possibility that they might want to keep the site free of visitors. However, it is my hope to add this event to the brochure and further details of the massacre can be found in the rationale. Since my initial investigation, I have heard

many rumours of the violence in Lennox. For example, large numbers of Aboriginal people were said to be pushed off the cliffs at Lennox Point. Therefore, depending on the decision of the Aboriginal Land Council, the content of the brochure could change considerably before publication.

The Final Format

The brochure is A3 in size and so is able to fit all the information collected. Its design allows it to fold out like a map. On this large face of paper, the sites and the descriptions will be visible. The ‘Beginnings of a Coastal Village’ text will be located on the first two sections of the brochure and the map of the town will be on the back. However, for the purposes of online submission, I thought it easier to temporarily format the information into a word document.
